Sicily, a land of magic and love
In a school in Sicily, one day the teacher asked her pupils to write an essay of their choice about a city. Nicolino, however, did not want to tell about just any city. He thought about his land and began to write:
I love my Sicily, the most beautiful land in the world. It is a magical island, kissed by the sun and surrounded by the sea.
According to an ancient legend, three sister nymphs — Kindness, Goodness, and Beauty — arrived on this wonderful island and were enchanted by it. Struck by its light and its nature, they asked Zeus to bless Sicily forever. The god granted their wish and transformed the three sisters into the three legs of the Trinacria, the symbol that still appears today on the Sicilian flag.
But there is also another story that is told among these lands.
It is said that there was once a princess whom a wicked sorceress had condemned to die at the age of fifteen. To save her from the fate that hung over her, she was placed on a boat and sent away from her kingdom. The sea carried her far away, until she reached the coasts of Sicily.
Here she met a brave young man who saved her. The princess was so beautiful and gentle that the young man immediately fell in love with her. However, the sorceress had not given up her plan: she wanted to kill the princess and turn her into a monstrous creature.
But the young man had a pure heart. With his courage and kindness he managed to break the curse, and the princess returned to being herself.
The sorceress, furious at her defeat, transformed herself into Medusa and tried to turn the two young people to stone. But at that very moment the three sister nymphs — Kindness, Goodness, and Beauty — intervened, stopped the evil creature, and turned her into stone.
Thus Sicily was saved, and the princess and the young man were able to live happily.
The Trinacria, with its three legs, still represents today the strength, harmony, and beauty of Sicily. At the center, the head of Medusa recalls the struggle against evil and the victory of kindness, courage, and love.
When the teacher read Nicolino’s essay, she smiled and said:
Well done, Nicolino. You truly love your land, and you could not have told it better.

Review
The short story Sicily, Land of Magic and Love by Zaira Sellerio is a delicate and symbolic narrative that brings together legend, memory, and feeling. Through the simplicity of a school essay written by the young Nicolino, the author manages to evoke the deep soul of Sicily: a luminous land, rich in history, myths, and traditions that continue to live in the collective imagination.
The story intertwines elements of Sicilian mythology — such as the Trinacria, the symbol of the island, and the figure of Medusa — with a fairy tale of love and courage. The three nymphs, embodiments of Kindness, Goodness, and Beauty, represent universal values that protect and safeguard the island. In this way Sicily is not only a geographical place, but becomes a symbolic space in which goodness, purity, and love are able to triumph over evil.
What makes the story particularly meaningful is the authentic feeling that shines through the lines: the author’s deep love for her native land. Sicily is described with the affectionate gaze of someone who carries within herself the roots, the colors, and the stories of childhood. However, this love is not closed or nostalgic. Zaira Sellerio now lives in Switzerland, and precisely this experience makes her perspective even richer: identity is not something that is lost with distance, but something that one carries within oneself and that can coexist with appreciation and respect for the country that welcomes us.
In the story one can therefore sense a double belonging: the affection for Sicily, the land of origins, and the gratitude toward Switzerland, the country where the author lives and builds her present. This perspective reflects a value deeply connected to the spirit of federalism and coexistence between cultures: loving one’s roots without ceasing to respect and value the place where one lives.
The message that emerges is simple but important: everyone should love their own land — whether it is the one where they were born or the one they have chosen to live in — and take care of it. Culture, traditions, and the landscape are a heritage that must be preserved with responsibility and respect.
With a simple and fairy-tale style, Sicily, Land of Magic and Love reminds the reader that identity is born from the love for one’s roots, but grows through the encounter with other places and other communities. It is a gentle invitation to rediscover the value of one’s land and to protect it, wherever it may be.
