Nominations were open to all villages characterized by traditional activities such as agriculture and forestry that use tourism as an additional tool to promote and preserve their cultural heritage and encourage sustainable tourism. The Swiss villages of Andermatt (canton of Uri) and Murten (canton of Fribourg) convinced the jury by their strong focus on sustainable development, their proximity to agricultural activities, and the local added value generated by tourism in their respective regions.

In the summer of 2022, three villages (Ernen, Andermatt, Murten) were selected in a national competition by a jury consisting of representatives from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Swiss Tourism Federation (STF), and Switzerland Tourism (ST), which then submitted nominations to the WTO. Andermatt and Murten convinced, the WTO nominating committee through their commitment to sustainable development.
