These transformations will affect many people around the world.

“The doubts of the population at the center of the debate.”

We must take the needs and doubts of the population into account when making decisions. Only in this way will the population accept the energy turnaround,” said Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga at the first meeting of the Commission.

The latter emphasized that governments must allow the people to participate in shaping this transition.

In his speech, he also referred to Switzerland’s good experiences with the introduction of the CO2 tax on fossil fuels in 2008.

The population accepted this tax because they understood that it is economically viable to live in a climate-friendly way.

The Commission was convened by Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, which currently has 26 members.
