New protected assets in the cantons of Geneva and Grisons

The Federal Council has adapted two inventories of Swiss settlements that are to be protected as well as useful to promote the culture of quality buildings

Updated Federal Inventory ISOS for the Cantons of Geneva and Graubünden
At its meeting on March 19, 2021, the Federal Council approved an update of the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites to be Protected (ISOS) for the cantons of Geneva and Graubünden.
This amendment marks the beginning of a new cycle of ISOS updates. The updated surveys will henceforth be available as geodata.

From the Geneva countryside to the Upper Engadin

The ISOS update covers the Geneva countryside and the Imboden, Maloja, Plessur and Viamala regions.
The satellite town of Le Lignon, the village of Russin and the hamlet of Cinuos-chel (S-chanf) are now added to the list of settlements of national importance, while locations such as Onex, Sézegnin, Veyrier, Felsberg, Paspels and Sarn have been removed.
This change marks the first step in the new cycle of updates to the Inventory, which will now also be published in digital format.

The 40 revised surveys online on May 5

The 40 or so updated surveys (13 for Geneva, 28 for Graubünden) will be available from May 5, 2021 on the federal geoportal (map.geo.admin.ch) as geodata and in PDF format.
In the course of the new update cycle, the existing surveys will be gradually replaced with the new data.
The ISOS is one of the federal inventories of objects of national importance compiled by the federal government under the Federal Act on the Protection of Nature and Cultural Heritage.

Regularly reviewed and updated, the ISOS provides insight into the development of settlements and their identity.
It identifies what is worthy of preservation and thus promotes a culture of quality construction. The Federal Council decides which objects should be included, modified or deleted after consultation with the cantons.
The Confederation systematically uses ISOS in the fulfilment of its tasks and the cantons and municipalities must take it into account in their spatial planning.
