Swiss motorway vignette 🇨🇭

Since 1985 there has been a tax on the use of Swiss motorways and semi-motorways, which is levied in the form of a vignette that can be obtained for CHF 40.

As of 1 December 2023, the new vignette for 2024 is available in a digital version in addition to the traditional sticker.

The electronic sticker and the sticker are equivalent and are valid for the calendar year plus one month before and one month after. In the case of the 2024 mark, therefore, from 1 December 2023 to 31 January 2025.

E-vignette and traditional adhesive sticker

The main difference is that the electronic sticker is digitally associated with the licence plate. Consequently, the use of the electronic sticker brings advantages in that it can be purchased online regardless of place and time and is valid directly after payment has been made. There is no need to apply it to the vehicle and then remove it. In the case of transferable number plates, only one electronic sticker is required, instead of one sticker per vehicle. In addition, if a new vehicle is purchased in the course of the year, it is not necessary to buy a new sticker if the number plate used is the same. In addition, it is no longer necessary to buy a new sticker if the windscreen is broken. The advance purchase of the electronic sticker allows travellers from abroad to avoid unnecessary stops and thus reach their desired destination more quickly. The electronic sticker is checked by means of random checks of the number plate at the border by employees of the Federal Customs and Border Security Service (FCAB), and within the country by the police.Only three pieces of information need to be provided when purchasing the electronic sticker: the vehicle category, the country of registration and the licence plate. It is not necessary to indicate, for example, the holder of the vehicle. The ‘Publicly visible’ option makes it possible to check whether a valid electronic sticker is already available for the relevant licence plate. This is particularly useful if a vehicle is used by several people, as in the case of rented vehicles or car sharing services.

Since its introduction at the beginning of August, the electronic sticker 2023 has already been sold more than 250,000 times via the UDSC online shop. The colour chosen for the icon of the electronic sticker and the 2024 sticker is green, in reference to Swiss motorway signs.

The sticker can be purchased at the usual points of sale such as post offices, garages and service stations, and the electronic sticker at www.e-vignette.ch.

Penalties for non-payment of the vignette

While driving on Swiss motorways, it is possible that local law enforcement agencies will carry out checks to verify the presence and validity of the sticker. Anyone found without a valid vignette, or who uses it in violation of the regulations, will be fined CHF 200.

Austrian Motorway Vignette 2024 🇦🇹

Neighbouring Austria also adopts the motorway vignette, ‘Autobahnpickerl’ or ‘Mautpickerl’, which has been mandatory on motorways and motorways since 1997. It can be purchased directly from the ASFINAG motorway website, or via app.

The annual vignette in Austria, as in Switzerland, is valid from 1 December to 31 January.

Please note that some motorway sections (especially some tunnels) are not included in the price of the vignette.

The connection through the Pfänder tunnel (A14), which is important for many travellers between Switzerland and Bavaria, is toll-free between Hörbranz (Lindau) and Hohenems (Diepoldsau).

The 2024 vignette prices vary per vehicle type, and from this year a daily vignette has been introduced for travellers passing through the country.

Vignette prices will be as follows:

Car:

  • annual, 96.40 euro;
  • 2 months, 28.90 euros;
  • 10 days, 11.5 euro;
  • daily only in electronic format, 8.60 euro.

Motorbikes:

  • annual, 38.50 euros;
  • 2 months, 11.50 euros;
  • 10 days, 4.60 euro;
  • daily in electronic format only, 3.40 euro.

Penalties for non-payment of the vignette

In case of misuse of the vignette (new vignette but not attached to the windscreen is equivalent to not having one), expired vignette, etc. you incur penalties of €120 if paid immediately, or €300 to €3000 with deferred payment. If the sticker has been tampered with, from 1 January 2008 you will have to pay €240 for cars and €130 for motorbikes.

Slovenian motorway vignette 2024 🇸🇮

To use motorways and motorways in Slovenia, you need a vignette. There are four different periods in which unlimited use of all toll roads is possible by purchasing an electronic vignette.

The annual vignette is valid from the start date specified by the customer until the end of the same date in the following year.

The six-month vignette is valid from the starting date set by the customer until the end of the same day after six months. This vignette is only available for two-wheel vehicles (motorbikes).

The monthly vignette is valid from the start date specified by the customer until the end of the same day after the following month.

The weekly vignette is valid for seven consecutive days from the starting date set by the customer.

For the less digital-minded, the vignette is also available in a sticker version, which can be purchased at petrol stations, in some bars, and at newsstands both in Slovenia and in neighbouring countries close to the border.

Bikes:

  • annual, 58.70 euro
  • six-monthly, 32.00 euro
  • weekly, 8.00 euro;

Car:

  • annual, 117.50 euro;
  • monthly, 32.00 euro
  • weekly, 16.00 euro;

Vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kilograms and a height of more than 1.3 metres above the first axle (combination vehicles and light vans):

  • annual, 235.00 euro;
  • monthly, 64.10 euro;
  • weekly, 32.00 euro;

The vignette is not obligatory on the following stretches

On the Gorenjska motorway (A2) – from the direction of Austria to the Hrušica junction towards the interior of Slovenia and from the Hrušica junction to the border crossing towards Austria. For this section the toll is paid at the same time as the toll for using the Karavanke tunnel and is valid between the first motorway junctions on both sides of the state border (in Slovenia up to the Hrušica junction, in Austria up to the Rosenbach junction).

On the Koper (H6) motorway – from the Koper (Semedella) junction to the end of the H6 Koper-Lucia motorway (in both directions). Due to the closure of the coastal road between Koper and Izola, there is a bypass on the motorway, which is why it is not necessary to have an electronic vignette to use the mentioned section (through the Markovec tunnel).

On the Maribor (H2) motorway – between Pesnica and Tezno. Due to the reclassification of the road into a regional road, this road is exempt from the electronic toll system.

Penalties for non-payment of the vignette

Anyone driving without a vignette risks fines ranging from 300 to 800 euros (plus the purchase of the vignette). If the fine is paid within 16 days by bank transfer it will be reduced by 50 per cent.
