The current Deputy Director and Head of the Private Law Division will take office on September 1, succeeding the retiring Martin Dumermuth

On February 24, 2021, Michael Schöll, currently Deputy Director of the Office and Head of the Private Law Division, was appointed Director of the Federal Office of Justice.
He will take office on September 1, 2021, succeeding Martin Dumermuth, who is retiring.
The 47-year-old Michael Schöll, who has been at the Federal Office of Justice since January 1, 2009, has a broad academic background and many years of experience in private business and administration.
As Deputy Director, he has proven that he has the specialist skills, management abilities and social skills required for leadership at the Federal Office of Justice.

Born in Romanshorn, Canton Thurgau,

Michael Schöll grew up in Romanshorn, Canton Thurgau, and studied law at the University of St. Gallen. He then obtained the Geneva Attorney’s License in 2000, the LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in May 2003, the New York State Attorney’s License in 2004 and the Doctorate from the University of Basel in June 2004.
Michael Schöll began his professional career as an assistant in the Scientific College of Law at the University of St. Gallen.
He then held, among other things, a teaching post for real rights at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and an assistantship for international private law, civil procedural law and the law of intangible property at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva.

From 2004 to 2008 he worked as a lawyer in a Zurich firm, and in January 2009 he became head of the Private International Law Division at the Federal Office of Justice.
In January 2012 he became deputy head of the Private Law department, which he took over in May 2015.
Michael Schöll succeeds Martin Dumermuth, who reaches ordinary retirement age at the end of August.
