Swiss Gruyere wins 34th World Championship Cheese Contest

The cheese called Gourmino Le Gruyere AOP, produced by Michael Spycher of Bergkäserei Fritzenhaus in Wasen im Emmental (Bern) has been named the best cheese in the world at the 34th edition of the “World Championship Cheese Contest” organized by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association with a score of 98.423 out of 100.

This Bernese cheese not only won this 2022 edition, but also those of 2020 and 2008.

Second place went to another Swiss cheese: the Appenzeller Mild-Spicy produced by Hans Näf of Käserei Niederbüren AG in Niederbüren, (St. Gallen) with a score of 98.331.   
The third place goes to the Austrian cheese Erzherzog Johann produced by Othmar Pichler and his team from Obersteirische Molkerei of Knittelfeld – Steiermark (Austria) with a score of 98.254.

The biggest contest in the world

The World Championship Cheese Contest is the largest technical cheese, butter and yogurt competition in the world and has been held every 2 years since 1957 in the state of Wisconsin in the United States of America.

Fifty-three internationally renowned judges have tasted, smelled and inspected over 3,000 cheeses from 141 classes presented at the event held at the Monona Terrace in Madison.

Twenty-nine countries were represented at this event this year.

The United States earned 94 Best in Class placements while Switzerland took home 10 gold medals, and the Netherlands 7.

The USA took part in the competition with cheesemakers coming from 33 American states: the State of Wisconsin excelled with 45 Best in Class titles followed by New York with 12 first places, and then Idaho with 11 gold medals.
