In advance more than 40 percent of LOB benefits…

In 2019, one in every 2.5 Swiss received a Pillar II retirement benefit, either as a lump sum or as an annuity, before the legal retirement age

In 2019, nearly 43 percent of women and 44 percent of men in Switzerland who received a lump-sum retirement benefit from the occupational pension system for the first time did so before reaching the legal retirement age.
Among those who received an annuity, 40 percent of women and 46 percent of men received it before reaching legal retirement age.
These are the latest results of the new pension statistics conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Median “pension” from 1160 (women) to 2144 (men) CHF per month.

In 2019, the median retirement pension paid by the occupational pension plan for the first time amounted to CHF 1160 per month for women and CHF 2144 per month for men.
This means that 50 percent of people of both sexes received a pension above this amount and 50 percent received a pension below it.
For lump-sum payments, the median amount was closer to 142,900 for men and 59,000 for women.
The marked differences between men and women can be attributed in particular to the different career paths taken by the two sexes.
Women are more likely to interrupt their professional activity or work part-time, mainly for family reasons.
In addition, the wage difference between men and women leads directly to differences in occupational benefits.
Household and family work, which is more often performed by women, is not remunerated and has no effect on retirement pension benefits.

In retirement, 13 percent women and 7 percent men

In 2019, 46 percent of men who received their first Pillar II retirement pensions and 44 percent of those who opted to buy out the lump sum had not yet reached legal retirement age.
For women, the proportions were 40 and 43 percent, respectively.
In contrast, 13 percent of women and 7 percent of men received their first pensions after reaching legal retirement age.
For recipients of occupational pension lump-sum benefits, the proportions were 21 percent for women and 18 percent for men.
The statistics compiled by the FSO do not provide information about the occupational status of individuals at the time they begin receiving retirement benefits.

Lower median annuities at legal retirement age

In 2019, the median monthly pension from occupational pensions for men who begin receiving benefits before reaching the legal retirement age of 65 is the highest (2702 francs), followed by men who are over 65 at the time of receiving their first pensions (2143 francs).
The lowest median monthly pensions for men (1785 francs) are those received by those who retire at the legal age of 65.
For women, however, the trend is slightly different.
The median monthly pension level is somewhat higher for women who receive Pillar II pensions after reaching the legal retirement age (1410 francs), followed by those below the legal retirement age of 64 (1321 francs).
As with men, the lowest median monthly pensions are those of women who receive pensions right after reaching the legal retirement age (990 francs).

One in two people in Switzerland receives only a pension

In 2019, almost half of the recipients of new occupational pension benefits received only the pension (men: 43 percent, women: 52 percent).
About a third received only the lump-sum benefit (men: 33 percent, women: 34 percent).
Also in 2019, the remainder of new beneficiaries (24 percent of men and 14 percent of women) received a combination of annuity and lump sum.
