Register of Italians residing abroad (A.I.R.E.) – In brief

The Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.) is managed by the Municipalities on the basis of data and information coming from the Consular Representations abroad. Registration in the A.I.R.E. is a right and duty of the Italian citizen and constitutes the prerequisite for making use of a series of services provided by the Consular Representations abroad, as well as for exercising important rights, such as:

  • the possibility of voting in political elections and referendums by correspondence in the country of residence, and for the election of Italian representatives to the European Parliament in the polling stations set up by the diplomatic-consular network in the countries belonging to the EU;
  • the possibility of obtaining the issue or renewal of identity and travel documents, as well as certifications;
  • the possibility of renewing driving licences (only in non-EU countries).

Citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods of more than 12 months and those who already reside there, either because they were born abroad or because they subsequently acquired Italian citizenship for any reason, must register with A.I.R.E..

Registration with the A.I.R.E. is completely free of charge and must be carried out following a declaration made by the interested party to the competent consular office within 90 days of the transfer of residence and entails simultaneous cancellation from the Register of Resident Population (A.P.R.) of the municipality of origin.

Italian museums and parks free of charge for AIRE members

The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism has set up a fund for the years 2021, 2022 and 2023, which allows Italian citizens living abroad who are registered with the Registry of Italians living abroad (AIRE) free access to various museums, archaeological areas and parks managed by the State, which normally charge an entrance fee.

To take advantage of this facility, all you have to do is show a document proving your registration with AIRE, such as

  • Italian identity card showing foreign residence;

In the absence of the above, it is possible to ask the Italian Commune of reference for a certificate of AIRE enrolment or to produce a self-certification in which one declares that one is enrolled in AIRE, indicating the commune of enrolment in accordance with D.P.R. 445/2000.
