Switzerland and Angola intend to strengthen their cooperation

Agreement to simplify relations between Bern and Luanda in the area of international judicial assistance in the fight against corruption

Switzerland and Angola intend to intensify their cooperation in the fight against international crime.
To this end, a memorandum of understanding on international judicial assistance in criminal matters was signed in Luanda.
The document, which was approved by the Federal Council on 18 June 2021, is intended to support the Angolan government in particular in the fight against corruption, a fight which is also in the interest of a clean Swiss financial centre.

Important administrative and organizational innovations

Although the Memorandum of Understanding does not create any new rights and obligations in the field of international mutual assistance in criminal matters, it does introduce important administrative and organizational innovations in the interests of efficient cooperation.
In particular, the central authorities of both states (in Switzerland: the Federal Office of Justice) will in future be able to contact each other directly and support each other in drawing up requests for mutual assistance.
In addition, the annex to the Memorandum of Understanding contains models of mutual assistance requests which meet the formal criteria of both states.
