New Swiss passport now available
The new Swiss passport can be ordered from cantonal passport offices or Swiss representations abroad. The new passport series meets the latest standards for identity documents and combines original graphic elements that recall the Swiss landscape.
The new passport series combines security, functionality and aesthetics and was created by making use of the latest technology in security elements for identity documents. It is the security elements, some visible to the naked eye, others only under UV light, that make the Swiss passport a unique and secure document.
A video has been produced to illustrate its main features:
The new passport design reflects the peculiarities of Switzerland: a country deeply tied to its origins and at the same time open to the world. The common thread of the new passport is water, an element that shapes and molds the Swiss landscape across all 26 cantons, from Alpine peaks to valleys. At the center of the new graphic design is the Gotthard massif with the Pizzo Rotondo. For it is here that the main Swiss rivers that flow across territorial boundaries originate. The massif also brings together the main design themes of mountains and water.
Temporary reintroduction of visa requirement for citizens of Vanuatu
As in the previous version of the ID document, biometric data are recorded on the microchip embedded in the passport cover. The data can only be read with the help of a device that guarantees encrypted data transmission. Fingerprints are specially protected, with Switzerland allowing access only to countries with data protection equivalent to Switzerland.
The new passport series includes the ordinary passport, diplomatic passport, service passport, travel passport (“refugee passport”) and passport for foreigners living in Switzerland.
All identity documents issued to date retain their validity until the expiration date indicated therein. It will still be possible to order the combined offer that includes the passport and ID card. The new ID card will be introduced in the first half of 2023.
