A new coin to celebrate the centenary of the «10 franc Vreneli»
Swissmint commemorates the last minting of gold Vreneli with the coin “100 years since the last minting of 10-franc Vreneli,” on sale from May 11, 2022.

50-franc gold coin dedicated to <100 years since the last minting of 10-franc Vreneli>
The 10-franc Vreneli gold coin, on which is depicted a bust of a woman looking to the left, her hair gathered in a braid and a fabric trimmed with edelweiss on her shoulders, was last minted in 1922. It is the younger sister of the legendary 20-franc Vreneli gold coin, and was produced between 1911 and 1922 at the Federal Mint in Bern. However, due to the thin thickness of the coin blank used and the conformation of the relief on the obverse side of the coin, the reverse side of the 10-franc Vreneli coin had to be modified. The Swiss cross with rays appears on the upper part, and the face value and year are shown in the center. On the lower part are depicted branches with rhododendron and gentian flowers. At the bottom is the mint mark “B” referring to Bern. The weight of the coin is around 3.226 grams of gold at a fineness of 900 thousandths fine. The diameter is 19 millimeters. A total of 2.65 million coins were minted between 1911 and 1922.
With the issuance of the 50-franc gold coin Swissmint commemorates 100 years since the last minting of the 10-franc Vreneli gold coin in 1922. To mark this event, the obverse side of the coin depicts the number 100 with overlapping zeros. Enclosed in the second zero is an enlarged section of the original Vreneli, which reproduces the bust of a woman looking to the left. On the lower edge of the coin, separated by a bar, are the dates 1911 and 1922 in reference to the period of issue of the 10-franc gold Vreneli. The reverse of the original coin has been taken up with two slight changes: the new face value is 50 francs, and the year of minting is 2022.
Swissmint‘s new special coin will be available from May 11, 2022 in a limited edition at www.swissmintshop.ch as well as in some numismatic stores and banks.
Description of coin quality
“Mirror bottom”: minting of the highest quality, the coinage is used for only about 500 coins and each piece is individually processed. In a complex procedure, the blanks are further polished and surface-treated. The coins are individually packaged in transparent capsules and sold in a case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
