The president of the Swiss Confederation will see the Pontiff and the Swiss Guards on May 6 in Rome, where 34 of the 135 new militiamen in service will be sworn in

President of the Swiss Confederation Guy Parmelin will visit the Vatican next week, where he will meet with Pope Francis and Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
He will then attend the swearing-in of the new Swiss Guards.

The focus of the talks on Thursday, May 6, 2021 will be the bilateral relations between Switzerland and the Holy See as well as the Swiss Papal Guard, whose numbers have been increased from 110 to 135 militiamen in stages since 2018.
This year, 34 new recruits from all over Switzerland will take the oath of office.

Restructuring of the Capitoline barracks planned

Due to the pandemic, participation in this year’s ceremony will be severely limited and there will be no host canton.
Established in 1506 by Pope Julius II, the Swiss Guard reports directly to the Pope and is responsible for providing security and service of honor.

The swearing in of the new Swiss Guards traditionally takes place on May 6 in memory of the 147 soldiers who fell during the Sack of Rome in 1527.
