The Coronavirus emergency has highlighted criticalities and strengths of healthcare systems. Now it is necessary to overcome the logic of emergency. The inaugural conference of “Innovabiomed” at Veronafiere developed around this key concept.

Giampaolo Tortora, Full Professor of Medical Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome and Director of the Cancer Center and Medical Oncology of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Gemelli IRCCS, member of the Scientific Committee of Innovabiomed:
“It has taught us so much about this pandemic. It has taught us how to manage hospitals internally, how to protect the sick and we have done it in many, in part we have succeeded but we have also learned how in a short time you can break down advances that cost decades of effort, both for treatment and for disease prevention and during the pandemic. The number of screening examinations that are a feather in our country’s cap for various diseases, I mention only those for the cervix, breast and colorectum, are skipped in millions of cases and this means making late diagnoses of oncological diseases with all the implications that this entails.”

Inevitable consequences: “Then we must learn from this and we must restart the territorial medicine that in the past has been dismantled and has overloaded the hospitals. It should be quickly restarted the cancer screening program by the Regions and increased health personnel that unfortunately has been reduced for economic reasons and we have seen how necessary it is. All technologies should be exploited, especially telemedicine to control patients remotely, to reassure them, monitor them and avoid that they turn to hospitals as the only point of reference. We have learned all this and we cannot miss this opportunity for the future”.
