On Thursday, April 1, 2021, the delegation of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) concluded its seventh periodic visit to Switzerland.
During the 11-day stay, the delegation visited several detention facilities in the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Aargau, Solothurn, Bern and Zurich.
In its seventh periodic visit, from 22 March to 1 April, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture visited several detention facilities in Switzerland.

The delegation inspected in particular the Champ-Dollon prison and the closed facility Curabilis in Geneva, various facilities of the cantonal police in Geneva, the Bois-Mermet prison in Lausanne, the forensic psychiatric clinic in Königsfelden (Aargau), the correctional facility in Solothurn, the Thorberg penitentiary and the correctional facility in Uitikon (Zurich).
The delegation, accompanied by experts and interpreters, visited persons deprived of their liberty following a decision by the authorities based on criminal law, criminal procedural law, civil and administrative law or military criminal law.

A recommendation will reach the Federal Council

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture will submit a report to the Federal Council on the situation in the facilities and places visited, in which it will also make recommendations for improving the conditions of detention based on the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, a Council of Europe body based in Strasbourg, is made up of lawyers, doctors, execution specialists and other experts.
It independently organizes visits to member states; Switzerland was the subject of visits in 1991, 1996, 2001 (2003 ad hoc visit as a supplement to regular visits), 2007, 2011 and 2015.
During these inspections, Committee members have the right to speak with detainees without witnesses.
