The sticker, which is valid from Dec. 1, 2022 to Jan. 31, 2024, can be purchased as usual at gas stations, garages as well as post office, customs and road traffic counters. Drivers must detach expired markings from the windshield to prevent them from obstructing visibility.

A bit of history

Since 1985 there has been a tax on the use of Swiss highways or semi-highways for cars, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, vans or campers (up to 3.5 tons), the collection of which takes the form of a highway sticker, costing CHF 40 per year. The same is valid from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the year following printing.

Can electric vehicles deliver a just energy transition?

To be pasted on the windshield

The sticker is valid only if it is pasted directly, and without employing any other materials, on the vehicle at the prescribed location: in the case of motor vehicles, it is to be fixed on the inside of the windshield, while in the case of trailers and motorcycles on an easily accessible, non-interchangeable part. It is prohibited to remove it and then reattach it on the same or another vehicle.

Introduction of the electronic sticker during 2023

The electronic marker is introduced during 2023, certainly only after next January 31. The Federal Council will decide on the date presumably in the first quarter of 2023. The introduction of the electronic mark during the course of the year has the advantage of allowing systems to be optimized in a phased manner, so that the Federal Customs and Border Security Service (FCOB) can incorporate lessons learned directly into the sale of the 2024 mark.

The electronic sticker, which can be purchased through a UDSC web portal, will not replace the current adhesive sticker, but both variants will be operated in parallel.

Fine in the absence of a valid vignette

Anyone who deliberately or negligently uses a national road with a toll vehicle without a valid vignette, or uses the same in violation of the current regulations, will be punished with a fine of CHF 200 to which CHF 40 for the purchase of the vignette itself will have to be added.
