In 2016, a law was passed in Liechtenstein that no longer restricts the expansion of casinos in the principality, leaving it to the free market. Since then, anyone who meets the conditions can obtain permission to open a casino.

Currently the small principality, already holds a world record with six casinos for about 39,000 inhabitants surpassing even Las Vegas.

The initiative to ban casinos was promoted by the “IG Volksmeinung” and called for the closure of existing ones within five years. Parliament, the Ruling House, the government, major parties and business associations had spoken out against it.

On Sunday, January 29, 2023, 73% of Liechtenstein voters voted against banning casinos: the initiative did not receive a majority in any of the eleven municipalities.
