Energy company Axpo, opened Switzerland’s largest “green hydrogen” plant in Domat/Ems (GR) last month, marking an important milestone in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Using hydroelectric power from Graubünden’s Reichenau power plant, the plant produces up to 350 tons of hydrogen per year, saving 1.5 million liters of diesel fuel and ensuring zero CO2 emissions.

The plant, which took about a year to build, is a unique case in the Graubünden region thanks to its hydroelectric-electrolysis synergy. This innovative process makes it possible to obtain climate-neutral hydrogen, contributing to the reduction of environmental impact.

The compression of hydrogen directly on site facilitates future distribution to gas stations and industrial customers, actively supporting the hydrogen economy both in Switzerland and in Europe. Axpo, in addition to this important project, is actively promoting hydrogen-related technologies, working with partners such as the Lake Lucerne shipping company to design the first passenger boat powered by green hydrogen.

The future of global hydrogen

The Domat/Ems plant thus represents a significant step toward decarbonization, demonstrating the crucial role that green hydrogen can play in combating climate change and promoting a low-carbon economy.

In addition, Axpo recently announced a partnership with ENEGO to study a 100 MW green hydrogen plant in Sicily, highlighting its international commitment to the development of this technology.
