First Strategic Partnership Dialogue between Switzerland and the USA
Colloquium between Livia Leu and Wendy R. Sherman on the prospects for the relationship between the Swiss Confederation and the United States in a changing world
The Secretary of State of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, Livia Leu, received her American counterpart Wendy R. Sherman in Bern on October 1 for the first Strategic Partnership Dialogue between Switzerland and the United States.
The focus of the talks was on the prospects for relations between the two countries in a changing world. The topics discussed included cooperation in science and economics, Switzerland’s good offices, and various current international issues.
With this meeting, Switzerland and the United States are consolidating an intensive and diverse bilateral dialogue at a high level.

Annual Meetings to Resolve Global Problems and Regional Crises
The FDFA Secretary of State and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State plan to meet annually for a Strategic Partnership Dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in international bodies, identify solutions to global problems, or defuse regional crises.
The dialogue complements and complements the two existing working groups in the political and economic sectors.
The talks focused on the close economic relationship between the two countries. The USA is Switzerland’s most important trading partner outside Europe and Switzerland is the third largest investor in the USA in the field of research and development.
Cooperation in the areas of cybersecurity, digitization, anti-corruption and climate change were also discussed, as well as sanctions policy and enhanced cooperation in the area of human rights.
The two Secretaries of State also discussed recent developments in different regions of the world and the current situation in Afghanistan.

A steady Bern-Washington axis on Iran and Afghanistan
They spoke about Switzerland’s mandate as a protecting power in Iran on behalf of the United States and took the opportunity to underscore the excellent relations between the two countries and identify possible ways to further deepen them.
During her stay in Bern, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman is also expected to pay a courtesy visit to Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis.
