and the search for a compromise"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The &#8220;von Wattenwyl talks&#8221; and the search for a compromise<\/h1>\n<h3><em>Since February 1970 the Federal Councillors have been meeting with the leaders of the parties in the Swiss Executive in the &#8220;old town&#8221; of Bern to discuss current Swiss affairs<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The Federal Councillors of the Swiss Confederation meet regularly with the heads of the parties represented in the Swiss executive to discuss current Swiss issues.<br \/>\nThe so-called &#8220;von Wattenwyl meetings&#8221; overlooking the River Aare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Debut in the West Wing of the Federal Building, after which&#8230;.<\/h4>\n<p>The first of these rounds of debates took place in February 1970, again in the West Wing of the Federal Palace.<br \/>\nOn the agenda were, among other things, measures to mitigate &#8220;<em>economic overheating<\/em>&#8220;.<br \/>\nThe first meeting that actually took place in the von Wattenwyl House was presumably on 15 June 1970.<br \/>\nAlready at the end of that summer month, the invitation referred to the &#8220;traditional free discussion with the chairmen of the parties and parliamentary groups represented in the government&#8221;.<br \/>\nThe term &#8220;von Wattenwyl talks&#8221; first appeared in the mid-1970s, but only came into common use in the following decade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/switzerland-the-fantastic-four-direct-democracy\/\"><strong>Switzerland and the &#8220;fantastic four&#8221; cantons at the dawn of Switzerland&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rooms of the House of Wattenwyl may only be used by members of the Federal Council and the Chancellor of the Confederation, the sole owner of the elegant building in the capital.<br \/>\nThe Confederation uses it for official receptions, but also for signing international agreements and conducting political talks of various kinds.<br \/>\nThe Federal Chancellery is responsible for reservations; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>The long history of the House of Beatrice von Wattenwyl<\/h4>\n<p>The Beatrice von Wattenwyl House in Bern&#8217;s Old Town dates back to 1446.<br \/>\nIn 1934, Jakob Emanuel von Wattenwyl donated this patrician home to the Swiss Confederation on behalf of his wife, who had died five years earlier and was baptized Beatrice.<br \/>\nThe B\u00e9atrice-von-Wattenwyl-Haus (also known as the Frisching-Haus because of the surname of the original owners) is located at 59 Junkerngasse, just a few steps from Erlacherhof.<br \/>\nThe building consists of three interconnected medieval houses, a circumstance still visible in the northern facade, on which the main entrance to the building opens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/swiss-monuments-hidden-treasure-to-be-exploited\/\"><strong>Swiss monuments? A &#8220;hidden&#8221; treasure to be exploited&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/athenian-democracy-revive-between-glarus-appenzell\/\"><strong>Athenian democracy? Revive between Glarus and Appenzell&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/europe-small-states-sketched-federalism\/\"><strong>The Europe of small States and a federalism barely sketched out&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between 1695 and 1710, the palace was rebuilt and remodeled by architect Joseph Abeille on the orders of its owner, Bernese patrician Samuel Frisching, an ancestor of Franz Rudolf Frisching.
