climate targets<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>On March 29, Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga and the head of SBB, Vincent Ducrot, attended the digital meeting organized by the Portuguese President of the Council of the European Union to launch the so-called &#8220;Year of the Railways&#8221;.<br \/>\nThe aim is to promote rail transport in Europe and thus help achieve the continental climate goals of the &#8220;Green Deal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/switzerland-long-term-climate-strategy\/\"><strong>Here is Switzerland&#8217;s long-term climate strategy<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/co2-law-a-must-for-switzerland-and-the-cantons\/\"><strong>CO2 Act: for Switzerland and the cantons it is a must<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the adoption of various measures, Switzerland is further expanding rail transport and thus climate-friendly mobility.<br \/>\nThe country welcomes the EU initiative and has also set ambitious climate targets and aims for a CO2-neutral balance of emissions by 2050.<br \/>\nIn order to achieve these goals, the railways must play an even greater role in mobility.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92419\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92419\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92419 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"Controllo dei biglietti su un treno SBB CFF FFS\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Controllo-dei-biglietti-su-un-treno-SBB-CFF-FFS.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ticket control on a SBB CFF SBB train<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>A very useful meeting point between EU and EFTA<\/h4>\n<p>In the margins of the launch of the &#8220;Year of the Railways&#8221;, an informal meeting has also been scheduled with the transport ministers of the EU to which the states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), i.e. Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, are also invited.<br \/>\nThe Federal Councillor will present Switzerland&#8217;s commitment at the international level in favour of cross-border rail links that are closer to the needs of customers.<br \/>\nThese actions proposed by Simonetta Sommaruga include the promotion of digital solutions and integrated, user-friendly international tickets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/switzerland-and-global-commission-for-the-energy-future\/\"><strong>Switzerland and the Global Commission for the Energy Future\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/switzerland-will-aim-to-switch-from-diesel-to-electric-buses\/\"><strong>Switzerland will aim to switch from diesel to electric buses<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/five-new-participants-for-exemplary-energy-and-climate\/\"><strong>Five new participants for &#8220;Exemplary Energy and Climate&#8221;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Federal Councillor intends to thematize Switzerland&#8217;s efforts to shift transalpine freight traffic from road to rail during the meeting.<br \/>\nIn the so-called &#8220;Year of the Railways&#8221;, Switzerland will strengthen the railroads with further measures: Switzerland is actively participating in the implementation of the &#8220;TEE 2.0&#8221; of cross-border traffic<\/h4>\n<p>The FOT is also working on implementing the technical pillar of the fourth European railway package as quickly as possible in order to further simplify and thus enhance cross-border rail traffic.<br \/>\nThe FOT is also implementing the rail network expansion plans decided by Parliament.
