More Switzerland in the new Air Navigation Act<\/h1>\n

In non-commercial visual flights, a national language may be used, but the checks on the mental condition and alcohol of pilots will be more stringent<\/em><\/h3>\n

At its meeting on March 5, 2021, the Federal Council took note of the results of the consultation procedure concerning the partial revision of the Federal Aviation Act and adopted the message and the corresponding bill.
\nThe revision is based on the implementation of an EU act and parliamentary action.
\nThe new provisions include preventive improvements in the area of health surveillance of aviation personnel through the introduction of a right to information and the carrying out of random alcohol checks.<\/p>\n

In addition, it will once again be possible to make radio telephone calls in a national language.
\nAfter Parliament had adopted the motion “Do not ban national languages for noncommercial visual flights”, the principle of English as the sole language of aviation radiocommunication will be accompanied by some exceptions.
\nFor non-commercial visual flights (VFR), pilots will be able to use a national language in addition to English in radiotelephony conversations.<\/p>\n

From the Germanwings case to new health requirements<\/h4>\n

In the wake of the safety measures taken at European level following the Germanwings accident some five years ago, the partial revision of the Air Navigation Act makes it possible to improve the early detection of mental illnesses among crew members and air traffic controllers.
\nAirworthiness is checked periodically as part of regular inspections at the Air Medical Service. However, under the new right to information, doctors and psychologists will in future be able to forward to the FOCA the results of diagnoses and information on possible acute mental or physical illnesses of their patients.<\/p>\n

From now on, the FOCA will be able to carry out random alcohol checks on crew members at any time without any indication of intoxication.
\nThis not only prevents possible alcohol abuse at an early stage, but also ensures that the crew members are in the necessary mental and physical condition to perform their duties responsibly.<\/p>\n
