{"id":92468,"date":"2021-02-09T19:26:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T19:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/in-una-moneta-50-anni-di-suffragio-femminile-in-svizzera\/"},"modified":"2021-05-24T10:16:53","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T10:16:53","slug":"in-a-coin-50-years-of-womens-suffrage-in-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/in-a-coin-50-years-of-womens-suffrage-in-switzerland\/","title":{"rendered":"In a coin 50 years of women&#8217;s suffrage in Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>In a coin 50 years of women&#8217;s suffrage in Switzerland<\/h1>\n<h3>On April 29, 2021, the Federal Mint will issue a new gold coin with a face value of 50 francs with which to celebrate half a century of women&#8217;s vote<\/h3>\n<p>On April 29, 2021, the Mint of the Swiss Confederation will issue a new gold coin with which it wants to commemorate the 50th anniversary of women&#8217;s suffrage in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The struggle of Swiss women to obtain the same political rights as men took its first steps in the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/switzerland-the-fantastic-four-direct-democracy\/\"><strong>Switzerland and the &#8220;fantastic four&#8221; of direct democracy<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/competitivenes-spirit-federalism\/\"><strong>The ethics of competitiveness and the spirit of federalism<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/waldstaette-forest-cantons-swiss\/\"><strong>Waldst\u00e4tte and the &#8220;forest&#8221; cantons at the dawn of Switzerland&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a long and arduous journey, the right to vote and stand for election for women finally became a reality in the popular vote on February 7, 1971 with 66 percent of the votes in favor and formally came into force on March 16 of that year.<\/p>\n<h3>11 women in the National Council in October 1971<\/h3>\n<p>In the next National Council election, held in October 1971, 11 women were elected.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years the proportion of women in Parliament has steadily increased to today&#8217;s 42%.<\/p>\n<p>February 7, 2021 will therefore mark the 50th anniversary of women&#8217;s right to vote at the federal level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Swissmint&#8221; will celebrate this momentous political event with a CHF 50 coin.<\/p>\n<h3>Applause for the work of Karin Widmer from Bern<\/h3>\n<p>The gold coin was designed by Karin Widmer, born in 1966, who lives in Wabern (Canton Bern).<\/p>\n<p>After her education at the &#8220;Schule f\u00fcr Gestaltung&#8221; in Bern, she worked for several years as a graphic designer and illustrator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/swiss-monuments-hidden-treasure-to-be-exploited\/\"><strong>Swiss monuments? A &#8220;hidden&#8221; treasure to be exploited&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/athenian-democracy-revive-between-glarus-appenzell\/\"><strong>Athenian democracy? It lives again between Glarus and Appenzell&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/swissfederalism.ch\/en\/europe-small-states-sketched-federalism\/\"><strong>The Europe of small states and a barely sketched federalism&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since 1995 he has been working on his own and creating illustrations, drawings and comics for newspapers, educational material, books for children and young people and CD covers.<\/p>\n<p>He also designed the graphics for the &#8220;100 Helvetia Europa&#8221; special stamp.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Swissmint&#8221; always in the front line for anniversaries<\/h3>\n<p>The Federal Mint &#8220;Swissmint&#8221; mints Swiss circulation coins for everyday payment transactions.
