Since 1985 there has been a tax on the use of Swiss motorways and semi-motorways, which is levied in the form of a vignette that can be obtained for CHF 40.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of 1 December 2023, the new vignette for 2024<\/strong> is available in a digital version in addition to the traditional sticker.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The electronic sticker and the sticker are equivalent and are valid for the calendar year plus one month before and one month after. In the case of the 2024 mark, therefore, from 1 December 2023 to 31 January 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

E-vignette and traditional adhesive sticker<\/span><\/h3>\n

The main difference is that the electronic sticker is digitally associated with the licence plate.<\/strong> Consequently, the use of the electronic sticker brings advantages in that it can be purchased online regardless of place and time and is valid directly after payment has been made. There is no need to apply it to the vehicle and then remove it. In the case of transferable number plates, only one electronic sticker is required, instead of one sticker per vehicle. In addition, if a new vehicle is purchased in the course of the year, it is not necessary to buy a new sticker if the number plate used is the same. In addition, it is no longer necessary to buy a new sticker if the windscreen is broken. The advance purchase of the electronic sticker allows travellers from abroad to avoid unnecessary stops and thus reach their desired destination more quickly. The electronic sticker is checked by means of random checks of the number plate at the border by employees of the Federal Customs and Border Security Service (FCAB), and within the country by the police.<\/span>Only three pieces of information need to be provided when purchasing the electronic sticker: the vehicle category, the country of registration and the licence plate. It is not necessary to indicate, for example, the holder of the vehicle. The ‘Publicly visible’ option makes it possible to check whether a valid electronic sticker is already available for the relevant licence plate. This is particularly useful if a vehicle is used by several people, as in the case of rented vehicles or car sharing services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its introduction at the beginning of August, the electronic sticker 2023 has already been sold more than 250,000 times via the UDSC online shop. The colour chosen for the icon of the electronic sticker and the 2024 sticker is green, in reference to Swiss motorway signs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sticker can be purchased at the usual points of sale such as post offices, garages and service stations, and the electronic sticker at www.e-vignette.ch<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Penalties for non-payment of the vignette<\/span><\/h3>\n

While driving on Swiss motorways, it is possible that local law enforcement agencies will carry out checks to verify the presence and validity of the sticker. Anyone found without a valid vignette, or who uses it in violation of the regulations, will be fined CHF 200.<\/span><\/p>\n

Austrian Motorway Vignette 2024 \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddf9<\/span><\/h2>\n

Neighbouring Austria also adopts the motorway vignette, ‘Autobahnpickerl’ or ‘Mautpickerl’, which has been mandatory on motorways and motorways since 1997. It can be purchased directly from the ASFINAG <\/a><\/strong>motorway website, or via app.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual vignette in Austria, as in Switzerland, is valid from 1 December to 31 January.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please note that some motorway sections (especially some tunnels) are not included in the price of the vignette.<\/span><\/p>\n

The connection through the Pf\u00e4nder tunnel (A14), which is important for many travellers between Switzerland and Bavaria, is toll-free between H\u00f6rbranz (Lindau) and Hohenems (Diepoldsau).<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2024 vignette prices vary per vehicle type, and from this year a daily vignette has been introduced for travellers passing through the country.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
