Andermatt and Murten among world’s best tourist villages<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) has selected the world’s best tourist villages, and for Switzerland, Andermatt (canton of Uri) and Murten (canton of Fribourg) have been awarded<\/em> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Nominations were open to all villages characterized by traditional activities such as agriculture and forestry that use tourism as an additional tool to promote and preserve their cultural heritage and encourage sustainable tourism. The Swiss villages of Andermatt (canton of Uri)<\/strong> and Murten (canton of Fribourg)<\/strong> convinced the jury by their strong focus on sustainable development, their proximity to agricultural activities, and the local added value generated by tourism in their respective regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the summer of 2022, three villages (Ernen, Andermatt, Murten) were selected in a national competition by a jury consisting of representatives from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO)<\/strong>, the Swiss Tourism Federation (STF)<\/strong>, and Switzerland Tourism (ST)<\/strong>, which then submitted nominations to the WTO. Andermatt and Murten convinced, the WTO nominating committee through their commitment to sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n

Switzerland holds the record for “Best Tourism Villages”<\/span><\/h2>\n

Out of more than 130 applications submitted, 32 were awarded “best tourism village.” The official award ceremony will be held in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, on Feb. 27-28, 2023<\/strong>. Switzerland, also counts last year’s award-winning resorts namely Gruy\u00e8res, Saas-Fee<\/strong> and Val Poschiavo<\/strong> boasting five “Best Tourism Villages,” tied only with Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to this prestigious mark of recognition, the winners will benefit from WTO media campaigns globally that will allow them to increase their visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2022, a total of 32 villages from 18 countries in the five world regions were recognized. The villages were evaluated by an independent advisory committee based on a set of criteria covering nine areas:<\/span><\/p>\n
