Wine consumption increased in 2021 in the Swiss Confederation<\/span><\/h1>\n

After the dip in wine consumption in 2020 due to the health crisis, consumption increased in 2021 to 255 million liters. Despite the increase in Swiss wine consumption compared to 2020, Swiss wines are losing market share slightly. White wines and sparkling wines are still in the lead.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

In 2021, total wine consumption increased slightly by 4.9 million liters to 255 million liters. The increase is mainly due to the consumption of white wine, which increased by 4 million liters to a total of 88.2 million liters. This is the highest volume since 2013. Red wine consumption, on the other hand, remained almost stable (+0.8 million liters) and stands at 167 million liters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swiss wine consumption in 2021 is 2.8% higher than in 2020, adjusted for the effect of the downgrading of Swiss wines with AOC to table wine and industrial wine. It amounts to 90 million liters. Despite the solidarity of consumers with Swiss wines, their market share for the year 2021 has decreased to 35.4% (-0.7%).<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at the consumption balance for the year 2020, the slight increase in total wine consumption in 2021 can be attributed to an increase in the consumption of foreign wines. The consumption of foreign white wines increased by 14.8%, while the consumption of foreign red wines increased more slightly at 3.4%.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sustained increase in the consumption of sparkling wine is also confirmed this year. In 2021, a total of 23.5 million liters of sparkling wine were consumed, 2.9 million liters more than in 2020 (+14.2%).According to data from the Swiss Wine Market Observatory (SVMO), sales of Swiss wines offered by eight major retailers remained stable (+0.7%) compared to the previous year, while sales of foreign wines increased slightly (+1.4%). The OFAG has calculated that these eight brands sold 32.4 % of the Swiss wines consumed last year.<\/span><\/p>\n
