Okay to drive with professional license plates in Germany<\/h1>\n

The Federal Roads Office and the German Federal Ministry of Transport have signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of traffic licences and controls<\/em><\/h3>\n

The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) of the Swiss Confederation and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (BMVI) of Germany have signed a provisional agreement on the mutual recognition of various vehicle licences and inspection plates in use in their respective countries.
\nVehicles with Swiss professional license plates will thus be able to drive on German territory; the text will come into force on July 1, 2021.
\nThe subject matter of the provisional executive agreement is the Swiss collective vehicle licences and the corresponding professional (U-type) licence plates on the one hand and the German vehicle registration certificates for vehicles with red license plates, temporary license plates and red license plates for vintage vehicles on the other hand.
\nFrom 1 July 2021, the date of entry into force of the text, vehicles with the above-mentioned characteristics will be able to circulate reciprocally within the two countries.<\/p>\n

Facilitating the activities of the automotive sector in border regions<\/h4>\n

The agreement makes it easier for the automotive industry to operate in border regions, for example by allowing the movement of test vehicles or journeys to test areas on the territory of both countries.
\nIn addition, drivers of vehicles with professional licence plates will no longer have to make detours, but will be able to choose direct routes.
\nOn the other hand, the use of professional license plates for export and import purposes will remain prohibited: for this purpose, special license plates can be obtained from the cantonal road traffic offices.
\nThe agreement, which was approved by the Federal Council at its meeting on April 14, 2021, will be valid from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023; FEDRO and BMVI are aiming to secure this recognition beyond the expiry date.<\/p>\n
